Lady Godiva was a patroness of the arts. She believed that her husband's high taxes were preventing the peasants of their village from having time for artistic endeavors. She approached her husband about lowering the taxes and he laughed so hard he fell off his stool and hurt himself.

He proposed that if she was truly set on introducing the peasants to art and beauty, she would lead the crusade herself. What better example of beauty than the nude body? He suggested she should ride through the village without clothing, to offer herself as inspiration to the villagers. They made a bet, if she completed her ride, he would remove all taxes.

With her head held high, Lady Godiva rode through the town, proving her faith in her cause and in her own perfection as well.
